Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti 2013
Valmiki was a great Sanskrit poet and wrote the famous Hindu epic – the Ramayana. Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated to mark the birthday of the poet who is considered the Ai Kavi or the first poet. The festival falls on the day of the full moon in the month of Ashwina, between September and October.
Valmiki is the author of Ramayana written in Sanskrit. The poet himself is represented in some scenes related in the Ramayana as a contemporary of the epic’s hero, Rama. He received Sita, after she was banished, into his hermitage. The poet educated Kusha and lava, the twin sons of Sita. The “Shioka” or epic meter was invented by Valmiki.
The Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti is the festival dedicated to the sage Valmiki. The birthday is a holy and auspicious day for his followers. People donate offerings and pray in temples dedicated to the sage. During the festival a Hindu ritual call Havana is performed. The offerings include flowers, garlands, cash and sweets.
It is an important festival in Rajasthan and is celebrated every year. Several programs are organized including religious functions to honor Valmiki. The people of Rajasthan perform ritual prayers to receive the sages’ blessings. The followers of Valmiki take a pledge on the day of the festival to work towards unity and integrity of the nation. They pledge to follow the path laid down by Valmiki. The Harijan Basti Valmiki temple hosts a nagar kirtan procession in Moga.
The festival has been promoted by the Government of Rajasthan as a major tourist attraction. Tourism has played an important role in spreading the significance of the festival. The tourists are allowed to join the festivities and enjoy the sights and sounds of the city celebrating Valmiki Jayanti.
