Sharad Purnima 2013, An Hindu Festival Celebrations
Sharad Purnima is a harvest festival celebrated on the full moon day of Ashvin month. According to Gregorian calendar it comes in the month of September-October. Traditional celebrations of moon are performed on this day which is also called as Kaumudi celebration.
Worship of goddess Lakashmi is performed in night and night vigil is observed on this day. Some people also observe fast on this day. It is a tradition to prepare kheer under moonlight and to consume it during midnight.
People who perform fast on this day also hear a very popular story associated with this day. Vrat katha of this day tells us about the importance of fasting and benefits that we can receive from it. Below is that popular story.
Once there were two sisters. The elder sister was very religious and used to perform Sharad Purnima vrat. Younger sister had no beliefs in all this but used to perform some traditions just for namesake and used to end her fast by noon. The elder sister had healthy children but the younger sister had no children. So, she was very worried and asked a saint about her problem. Then the saint said her to complete the vrat of Sharad Purnima with full interest. Then she recognized her fault and performed the next vrat of Sharad Purnima with full devotion. But her next son also got died at the time of birth. Then she followed a plan and placed her died son on a chair by wrapping his body in a cloth. Then she called her elder sister and asked her to sit on that chair. The child started crying as the elder sister bent down to sit. So, the child gained his life back by the touch of elder sister. This is because of power of Sharad Purnima vrat.
After this miracle, people started performing the vrat of Sharad Purnima with full devotion.
