Thyagaraja Aradhana 2013
Thyagaraja Aradhana or Thyagaraja Aradhanotsavam is celebrated to pay homage to the saint poet Sri Thyagaraja Swamy. It is the 164th Thyagaraja Aradhana utsavam. It is held every year at his Samadhi on Pushya Bahula Panchami, the fifth day in second half of Pushya month.
Thyagaraja Aradhanotsavam is held for five days in the Pushya month every year. Though it is celebrated worldwide, Thiruvaiyaru Thyagaraja Aradhana is the main festivity observed at the Pancharatna Kriti carnival. The musical festival held for five days every year. In 2012 this music festival was celebrated from January 9 to 13.
Sri Thyagaraja Swamy lived in the Thiruvaiyaru, Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu in the 19th century. Sri Thyagaraja Swamy was the saint composer who composed many kritis or sankeerthanas in Carnatic music. Thyagaraja had died in 1847 and a few days before his death he had renowned all that he owned and had become a sanyasin. It was not until around 1903 that Thyagaraja’s last surviving disciples, Umayalpuram Krishna Bhagavatar and Sundara Bhagavatar returned to Tiruvayyaru made a proper memorial for him.
Along with the one mentioned above, another Thyagaraja Aradhana is held at Cleveland every year in Ohio (USA) in the April-May period. Many Carnatic musicians supervise and perform in that festival too.
In Kozhikode districtthe Thyagaraja Aradhana Trust conductsa 5 day music festival in honor of Sri Thyagaraja every year. The festival is complete with Uncchavritti, rendering of Divyanama kritis, Pancharatna kritis, and concerts by professional artistes as well as students of music from morning till late in the evening.
Since this festival is conducted to pay tribute to the most legendary musician and composer saint of Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated by organizing music concert where the Carnatic music maestra perform for thousands of classical music lovers.
It is thus, a very important festival in India as well as for the whole world.
